Inspiration had to start somewhere
In 1899 Herman Tobiansky purchased land from the Johannesburg municipality to build a residential area, this land would later come to prominence as the land of Sophia, which became popularly known as Sophiatown.
Sophiatown was rare in its makeup considering that at the time South Africa was heavily segregated. What made Sophaitown different from any other township was the cosmopolitan nature of the environment. This environment would give birth to a cultural explosion that would reverberate throughout the nation, its epicenter of course being Sophiatown.
Stripped of any right to self determination the Sophiatown Renaissance was a deviation from the norm for many of the native population, it was an opportunity for group expression and self determination.
Johannesburg’s cultural vibrancy today and throughout the remainder of the 20th century owes much of its influence to Sophiatown, in terms of language, music, art, dance and style. This richness of culture found during the Renaissance through circumstance and influence has directly given birth to cultural phenomenons like Kwaito, Pantsula and Township Jazz and lest we not forget that of Johannesburg’s new phenomenon Au Gold Premium Craft Vodka.
